Generous donation helps in saving pets

On November 17, 2011, the Weltonville Fire Company received a donation that may help prevent pets from falling victim to smoke inhalation due to fire.

During a recent department training Invisible Fence of the Southern Tier demonstrated the use of an oxygen recovery mask kit for pets and donated the kit to the Weltonville Fire Company.

“We hope that by donating oxygen mask kits that we will contribute to saving more pets and hopefully protect pet owners that may risk their own life to save a pet in a fire,” said Dan Kelley, owner, Invisible Fence of the Southern Tier.

It is estimated that in 2006, more than 40,000 pets died in fires; most succumbed to smoke inhalation. In most states, emergency responders are unequipped to deal with the crisis. The donation of these specially designed animal oxygen masks will enable the Weltonville Fire Company first responders to assist the pet owner to efficiently administer oxygen to a stricken animal, hopefully buying them time to reach a qualified veterinarian for treatment.

“We want to thank Invisible Fence for their generosity and believe that this kit will be a valuable tool in the event we are able to rescue an animal stricken with smoke inhalation due to fire; we can all recall a fire from the past where this kit could have helped save a pet,” said, Ronald Holbrook, Fire Chief, Weltonville Fire Company.
